Ten years ago, network architecture was relatively simple.

A headquarters, a few branch offices, and one or two data centers. Connectivity was delivered via MPLS or a fixed internet connection. Predictable, stable, and relatively easy to manage.

Today, that reality has completely changed.

Organizations now operate in a world of hybrid connectivity. In addition to fiber, there is increasing adoption of Fixed Wireless Access, such as Starlink and 5G, combined with cloud platforms, edge locations, and international sites that must all stay continuously connected.

The network has evolved from a static infrastructure layer into a dynamic ecosystem of connections.

And that is exactly where the challenge begins.

Many network architectures are still designed for yesterday’s world. They assume predictability, fixed paths, and limited variation in connectivity, while today’s reality is defined by constant change, fluctuations, and a growing number of dependencies. New connections are added, but the underlying architecture does not fundamentally adapt, causing complexity to accumulate over time.

The result is a network that grows, but does not evolve. A landscape where every new technology introduces additional management, more tools, and greater dependency, instead of flexibility and control. This creates a gap between what organizations need and what their network is actually capable of delivering.

Routers, firewalls, SD-WAN solutions, monitoring tools, and telecom portals all operate alongside each other, each with their own interface, configuration, and logic.

This leads to fragmentation. Visibility is limited, troubleshooting becomes complex, and organizations become dependent on specific vendors and technologies.

But the biggest limitation lies deeper.

Connectivity is still treated as infrastructure, while in reality it has become a critical resource that directly impacts performance, user experience, and business continuity.

In an era where network availability is critical, Wanscale goes beyond traditional failover mechanisms. While conventional systems only recognize connections as either “up” or “down,” Wanscale uses multiple connection statuses and real-time quality measurements.

Thanks to Telemetry Based Routing, the platform intelligently routes traffic based on real-time network data and the type of application traffic. This ensures that critical services like VoIP and video conferencing always run over the most stable connection, even when other links are degraded.

Wanscale combines continuous monitoring, advanced interpretation of network behavior, and dynamic routing into a flexible and reliable solution. No all-or-nothing approach, but full control and maximum availability.

Traditional failover mechanisms typically operate using simple logic: they send test packets over the connection at regular intervals, using methods like ping or HTTP requests. If these test packets are successfully received, the connection is considered “up.” If not, the system triggers a failover to an alternative connection.

In theory, this sounds like a solid approach. But in practice, the system is overly simplistic and lacks critical nuance.

Imagine a scenario where a connection is experiencing 40% packet loss. This means nearly half of all data packets are being lost in transit. However, there’s still a chance that the few test packets sent by the monitoring tool make it through. The result? The system concludes that the connection is healthy and continues to use it.

Meanwhile, users experience something entirely different:

VoIP calls stutter or drop

VPN sessions freeze or slow down drastically

Cloud applications respond slowly or not at all

In short: the line is technically “up,” but in reality, it’s not functioning properly. The failover isn’t triggered because traditional monitoring tools don’t “see” the problem. This creates a false sense of availability, leading to frustration, loss of productivity, and potentially even business-critical disruptions.

This is exactly why a modern, data-driven approach like Telemetry Based Routing is essential in today’s network environments. Instead of relying on snapshots in time, this approach looks at the overall behavior of the connection over time, including packet loss, latency, and jitter and responds intelligently.

That’s exactly how I felt over the past few weeks while building new functionality for the Wanscale platform. It took me back to my time at DC Spine, we were pioneering then too, coding something new, something that didn’t exist yet, but that we just knew would truly make customers happy.

I felt that same excitement again. Together with the team, we dove into the code, considered every detail of the user experience, and built something that simply felt right.

Adding virtual machines (VMs) to both the service edge and the central platform feels like a logical and valuable step forward.
With the expansion of Virtual Machines within our platform, organizations can easily run their business-critical applications within our trusted infrastructure. Think, for example, of network scanners for vulnerability detection and traffic monitoring, or monitoring tools such as Zabbix, Grafana, or Prometheus that provide real-time insights into the status of networks and infrastructure. Application proxies for load balancing or caching can now also be deployed directly, as well as SIP Session Border Controllers (SBCs) that ensure secure and controlled VoIP traffic.

Additionally, virtual firewalls can be used for specific segments or temporary network environments, and DNS and DHCP servers can be easily deployed locally for higher availability. For logging purposes, tools like syslog servers or Graylog instances can be utilized, while NetFlow or IPFIX collectors provide valuable insights into network traffic and capacity. Finally, setting up secure, encrypted connections between branches or remote users is possible via flexible VPN gateways.

All these applications seamlessly align with the principle of Network Function Virtualization (NFV), where network services are fully software-based and deployed independently of physical hardware.

This not only makes management simpler but also faster, more scalable, and more secure.

What makes this expansion especially remarkable is that we host Virtual Machines not only in the cloud but also at the service edge. This means: computing power directly at the customer site, as close as possible to the source of the data.

This brings significant advantages. Because applications run locally, users benefit from extremely low latency: responses are faster and performance noticeably better. Additionally, sensitive data remains within the local environment, enhancing security and contributing to compliance. And thanks to our central Wanscale portal, you retain full control over all VMs, whether they run centrally or at the edge of the network.

This approach makes our solution particularly suitable for environments where speed, security, and reliability are crucial.

The recent global outage at Starlink shows that even the most advanced satellite networks are vulnerable. At Wanscale, we observed the impact in real time, and thanks to intelligent failover, our clients experienced no service disruption. In this article, we explain why redundancy, both in the sky and on the ground, is essential for reliable connectivity.
